About

Bookkeeping built around you.

Luminous Ledgers exists to take the stress out of your books — not add to it. I work with small business owners who are tired of feeling overwhelmed, behind, or in the dark about their own finances.

My Story

I started with a simple belief.

Small business owners shouldn't have to feel anxious about their own finances. I've heard too many horror stories of people being ignored by their bookkeeper, left confused by their numbers, or told their books are a mess — with no clear path forward.

Luminous Ledgers was built to be different. I take the time to understand your situation before I ever suggest a solution. I explain things clearly. I show up consistently. And I never push services you don't need.

Whether your books are spotless or a complete disaster, I'll meet you where you are — without judgment.

Meet James

The person behind the books.

I'm James. I hold a Ph.D. in engineering, supported by two master's degrees in the same field. I served as an officer in the U.S. Navy and went on to work for the Department of the Navy for nearly two decades — overseeing projects up to $24M and managing programs with annual budgets exceeding $1 billion. I know what it means to be accountable for numbers that matter.

My wife and I owned and operated three rental properties — one in Florida and two in Washington, D.C. That experience gave me a firsthand appreciation for why proper bookkeeping isn't just a nice-to-have. When the books are off, everything else gets harder. When they're clean, you can make decisions with confidence.

I'm a math nerd, and proud of it. I'm certified in both QuickBooks Online and Xero, and I believe strongly in continuing education. I actively pursue opportunities to deepen my understanding of accounting, bookkeeping, and the software solutions that support small business owners.

All of that background shapes how I approach your books — with rigor, care, and a genuine interest in getting it right.

Active duty also taught me how to take criticism. If you find a mistake or need something done differently, I will listen and take action — not get defensive or take offense. We are in this together, and I want you to know you can always come to me, trust that I'll hear you out, and count on me to make it right.

How I Work

What you can expect from me.

Honesty over salesmanship.

I will never recommend a service you don't need. If I'm not the right fit for your situation, I'll tell you that too.

You deserve to be heard.

Every engagement starts with listening. I want to understand your situation before I ever suggest a solution.

Plain language, always.

Bookkeeping doesn't have to be confusing. I explain your numbers in plain English so you always know where you stand.

Small businesses are my focus.

I work exclusively with small business owners and freelancers. It's the only world I serve.

Who I Serve

Built for small businesses.

I work with freelancers, sole proprietors, and small business owners across a range of industries. If you're running your business and trying to keep your finances from becoming a source of stress, you're exactly who I had in mind.

I'm not the right fit for large corporations or complex multi-entity structures — and I'll tell you that upfront if it's the case. What I do, I do well, and I do it for people who need a bookkeeper they can actually talk to.
